Space1 Data Cards

SPACE CARDS FOR DATA
Space1 is testing a number of data cards for retention and transmission of data including images and video. Data is acquired via rockets, drones, quads, hexes, cameras and flight instruments.

Two 16 Gb Micro Pro SD HC Class 10 from China
Tests were first performed successfully on two tiny China brand cards from China, 16Gb Micro Pro SD HC Class 10 cards rated at up to 90MB/s for full HD recording. Initially these two cards will be flown on the top two Space1 Chaser Drones for Safety Rocket inspections prior to and during missions. These cards worked fine when inserted into the Transcend USB 3.0 card reader model TS-RDF8W made in China and mounted quickly when fed by a USB port to an Apple iMac, circa (c) 2011 running 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 and Mac OS 10.6.8. These cards are MS-DOS (FAT32) formatted. The cards have 1.8Mb used and 15.93Gb available each. These cards also work on SD card adapters, fit the iMac, and mount to the desktop without use of the Transcend USB 3.0 card reader. The size of these cards are probably overkill for the Chaser Drone with two batteries, each of which may last 8 to ten minutes. See Drone Data below. These cards, with no adapters, are only $7.99 from China sources.

Two 8 Gb MicrosdHC UHS-I Class 10 from Transcend made in Taiwan
Both of these cards came with full SD card adapters, just insert the micro sd card and it fits into the computers full SD card slot, and it immediately mounted to the desktop as a drive. No card reader was necessary. Cost was reasonable for all cards and the supplier source has additional size cards 16Gb and 32GB. These cards are MS-DOS (FAT32) formatted and have 1.84Mb used on the disk with 7.84Gb
available. These cards are $10.99 with the card adapter at Amazon or $7.55 ea. in Taiwan.

Drone Data
Chaser Drone data storage required for video: per a youtube video, the measured eight minutes of recorded HD video (1280×720@20fps) occupies about 270MB on the camera’s micro SD card. Use the smallest 8Gb cards for multiple record sessions. These drones accept cards up to 32Gb, hence the FAT32 card format.

Chaser Drone Card Capacity
Cards in the FAT32 format are up to 32Gb.

Card Readers Made in China
Two Transcend card readers were purchased locally in Taiwan, one for USB 3.0 and the other for USB 2.0. The newest standard is a Transcend USB 3.0 Super Speed Multi-Card Reader for SD, SDHC, SDXC UHS-I, SDXC, SDXC UHS-I, MICROSD, MICROSDHC, MICROSDHC, MICROSDHC UHS-I, MICROSDXC, MICROXDSD UHS-I, COMPACTFLASH, MEMORYSTICK. The card reader reads yo ti 130 MB/s and writes at 95 MB/s, The item number TS-RDF8W and costs $18.07 at USA Amazon pricing or $14.70 in Taiwan.

The older format is a Transcend P8 15-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader TS-RDP8W White $13.26 at USA Amazon pricing or $10.58 in Taiwan. It reads SD, SDXC, MMC, Memory Stick, MicroSD, microSDHC and CompactFlash. Data transfer rates are 480MB/s. It comes with a cable that plugs into USB on a computer.

Built In Card Reader
Note, a carder reader is built into an Apple iMac, circa (c) 2011 running 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 and Mac OS 10.6.8. Look on the side of the monitor.

Micro Card Storage
Tiny micro sd cards are easily lost. They store well in the original snap lock clear plastic packages from Transcend, but even these are too small and can become lost. A shoe box works well for storage. The cards also can be kept inside the micro sd adapters, inside the card reader, and inside the card slot on the Chaser Drone.
